Laurie Miller

Hi, I’m Laurie

I’m a play therapist with a deep passion for helping kids and teens feel seen, heard, and supported. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from the University of Denver in 2024 and have since dedicated my work to supporting children and youth, ages 4–14, as they navigate challenges like anxiety, depression, big transitions, and the many ups and downs of growing up.

My approach is both trauma-informed and strengths-based—I believe every young person already holds the tools they need for healing and growth, and my role is to help them access those inner resources through connection, creativity, and play. I’m currently pursuing certification in Synergetic Play Therapy and often draw on the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model to guide my work.

In addition to my role at Shuteye Counseling, I also provide therapy to students in public schools, where I have the opportunity to support kids in their everyday environments. I’m continually inspired by the resilience and wisdom of the children I work with.

Outside of therapy, I love learning about ecology and conservation, spending quality time cooking with friends and family, and unwinding with a cozy game on my Nintendo Switch.

About Me

How did you pick play therapy?

In many ways play therapy found me! I had always worked with children in different capacities and when I learned about play therapy I was hooked. Play therapy validates the child’s experience and also helps them to experience big feelings while supporting their nervous system. This is something I wish I had experienced as a child, and I feel lucky to be able to support kiddos in this way.

Are you a cat or dog person?

Cat person! My family has three cats, they run the house and we love them so much.

Morning person or night owl?

Night owl for sure, mornings are for sleeping in and lots of coffee!

What do you want your clients to remember most about what you teach?

I want the kiddos I work with to remember that all emotions are welcome, their needs are valid, and their voice is important.
